This is a really neat program that pairs prision inmates with needy dogs for a period of rehabilitation and then homes the dogs to families. What a great way to rehab dogs and prisioners. http://www.hopedogs.org/
The other thing I want to mention since I am talking about shelter dogs, does your dog wear a pet id tag? They should or they could end up as a shelter dog themselves. There are many places to purchase a pet id tag, but the best one I have found is http://www.easypetidtags.com/.
